Random Encounters

The treasure hordes they once guarded are long gone but whispered stories and cryptic glimpses on blurry videos hint that monsters live on amidst the detritus of our urban dungeons.

Random Encounters is a set of four sculptures inspired by the idea of classic Dungeons & Dragons monsters surviving in contemporary environments. Each piece features painted lighting that is intended to give the situation more atmosphere.

The collection was made specially for my 'One Thing After Another' solo show at Clutter Gallery NY.

Random Encounters No 1

One of a short series of sculptures inspired by the idea of classic Dungeons and Dragons monsters surviving in contemporary urban environments. Random Encounters #1 shows a Beholder in a derelict building. The design of the display is intended to make the viewer feel they have suddenly come face to face with it through a doorway.

Made for my 'One Thing After Another' solo show at Clutter Gallery NY. Epoxy clay in a wooden display. Stands 21cm tall.

Random Encounters No 2

One of a short series of sculptures inspired by the idea of classic Dungeons and Dragons monsters surviving in contemporary urban environments. Random Encounters #2 shows a Rust Monster glimpsed by flashlight as it feeds on an old bike frame and beer cans in an abandoned subway tunnel.

Rust Monsters are typically seen as more of a nuisance than a danger, but all animals will defend themselves when cornered. I gave it extra eyes to accentuate its invertebrate classification, and reasoned that the weird propeller structure on the tail might be used as a threat display when the creature is disturbed.

Made for my 'One Thing After Another' solo show at Clutter Gallery NY. Epoxy clay on a wooden display base. Stands 18cm tall and 22cm wide.
