A Spark of Being - A Glowing Frankenstein Tribute

A display piece for Clutter Gallery's Glow Show 2 when the gallery will be lit with ultraviolet lighting. I wanted to make something that would work not only under UV and with its own integral glow but also in daylight. The choice of subject was probably partly thanks to the old Aurora glow-in-the-dark model being the first kit bought for me by my father.

The creature was sculpted in Milliput. The chair and detailing were cut from MDF. I used high intensity pigments in the two electric arcs and mixed transluscent flourescent paint that I built up in layers on the face. The paint application was time-consuming as I was continually switching between UV, darkness and regular lighting to makes sure the paint looked right under all conditions.

"With an anxiety that almost amounted to agony, I collected the instruments of life around me, that I might infuse a spark of being into the lifeless thing that lay at my feet." - Mary Shelley (Frankenstein)
